Automatic Weather Monitoring System (ASMM) of NPP "Belene" was designed in 1997, the first stage was realized in 1998. The second stage was carried out in 2006-2007. NPP "Belene" is under construction and this determines the specificity of the ongoing weather monitoring - its purpose is to set the local weather conditions in the area before the construction of the NPP.
AMS1 location is selected in the typical orography of Svishtov - Belene lowlands point. Its proximity to the site of NPP "Belene" will allow to assess changes in microclimate after the introduction of NPP "Belene" in operation.
AMS2 location is selected at the top of the prevailing level in the area. On one hand, allows the wind direction and speed to be regarded as less affected by terrain features, i.e. with acceptable approximation for the task of monitoring - as background. On the other hand, displacement of the terrain is such that the height of the sensors will be approximately the height of the ventilation stack of NPP "Belene", i.e. practically the height of the discharge of radionuclide in normal operation. This fact is important for the used diffusion model because it provides data for wind speed and direction at the level of discharge of pollutants. The location of AMS3 is lowland, but 10 km. west of NPP "Belene", as this place is not expected to the affect of the microclimate in the implementation of NPP "Belene" in operation. Information from AMS3 will be needed to refine the assessment of the environmental impact of nuclear power, especially in the heat treatment. Through statistical analysis of meteorological data from AMS1 and AMS3 before and after introduction of NPP "Belene" in operation, can be determined its impact on the microclimate in the area.
For pre-operational meteorological monitoring until 2006 are used AMS model MS&E-3MD with integrated nonvolatile memory in which is stored the measurement data. The volume of memory allows archiving of hourly measurements, and extreme values (the time of registration) within 45 days. After deciding to continue the construction of NPP "Belene" in 2006, three AMS models are modified in MS&E-3RD. This solution allows to ensure uniformity of the rows of meteorological data for the period before and after commissioning and obtaining a statistically significant evaluation, with relatively little data.
In 2007 to ASMM of NPP "Belene" is added Automatic System for Аерологично Probing (ASAP). During the running-meteorological monitoring of the NPP, ASAP will provide data for the vertical profile of meteorological elements necessary for the design and licensing of the NPP site. After entering the NPP "Belene" in operation ASMM will provide necessary data for the layer height and mixing speed and direction of the main transmission in the atmosphere in the event of a nuclear accident.
